Why two inhales instead of one deep breath?
The double inhale — a full breath followed by a second, shorter "top-off" inhale — maximally inflates the alveoli (the lung's air sacs) in a way a single breath doesn't. It's the specific mechanism that makes this different from an ordinary deep breath.
Why is the exhale so much longer than the inhale?
